As a hard working tax paying American citizen am I entitled to anything? According to our politicians and many others, I’m not. It is my duty to wake up everyday, go to work for some organization, work all day into the wee hours of the night (without complaint), go home, watch a couple of hours of television (preferably Fox because they are really telling the truth), eat a packaged dinner and then go to bed. Tomorrow I will do the same. Weekends are not for personal errands, family or fun because I have to go to work. Several of my colleagues have been laid off and so now (without an increase in pay or benefits because I do not deserve it – I’m unqualified) their job duties are now my job duties and I better not slack or I will be canned next. On the occasional day I leave the office before the mall closes I am to dutifully go and buy junk that I will never really use to support the retail industry.
When I get sick I am to still go to work and not complain about it. I am to go to the local pharmacy and buy several over the counter drugs. Once my symptoms get worse my boss (who is completely annoyed with my ineptitude to overcome my sickness by will power alone) will allow me leave work for two hours to go see a doctor who will recommend an unnecessarily strong prescription that will cause some unforeseen side effect in the future. If I need to go to the doctor again I warrant a warning regarding all the personal time I am using but I better not sneeze or cough too loudly in the office for fear of pissing off the wrong person and getting canned or possibly demoted for such weakness. If my job does not offer health insurance or the coverage I do pay high premiums for does not cover my medical needs, well then I do not deserve the right to go to the doctor if I cannot pay him/her with cash, check or credit card.
My socio-economic class is what entitles me to comprehensive healthcare and a life that consists of anything more than sleeping at night, eating a TV dinner and spending the majority of my waking hours at one, two or three jobs. This includes proper care for my teeth, prescriptions, surgery for a life-threatening ailment, cancer treatment, AIDS treatment, an abortion (whether life saving or not), or any other necesary medical care I may need that will enable me to live. And although I go out to work everyday, follow the law and am kind to others, I do not deserve to have heat in my house, food on my table, clothes for my children, a house free of vermin, electricity or anything else that I cannot afford on my meager salary. If am poor, broke or struggling to make ends meet it is because I am lazy. I am not entitled to any happiness outside of the wonderful option of serving the needs of those who have assumed more power than myself in American society. Actually, it turns out I am not entitled to life itself if I cannot afford it on the wages I earn because those who have more than I do deserve it more. The catch to all of this is it’s still my civic duty to serve and pay into the American system, I mean who would pay for all the salaries of the politicians, bail out Wall Street, or make up for the tax breaks of the all assuming powerful and rich citizens of America. No, my lot in the life is to carry all you bastards on my back.
All considered, I may be wrong but it seems I have two choices – death or leave and find another system that allows its citizens a life. Unfortunately for me, finding another system takes time and money, neither of which I have an abundance of since I’m always at work and my meager salary barely pays for the basics, much less a plane ticket out of the wonderful US of A. So I guess my only other option is death.
Thank you very much for the clarity of the matter. I have just discovered the American Dream – slave labor till death. How stupid of me to expect more of a country that owes its existence to the exploitation of my ancestors. The luxury of life belongs to those with more and since I am not one of those people I am entitled to death.

The American dream is quite literally just that, a “dream” & nothing more (for those still ignorant enough to believe in such fairy tales, ignorant enough to believe in equality & don’t even think about true & sincere equal rights HA!!!) You have the right to remain silent…………(& that’s about it) as you scurry about like peasants, before their King’s Slaves before their masters. Fore if you f#*k-up, stand-up or stand out you will be disciplined. If you speak out, you mide-as-well put on a turban & walk around with a bomb. Freedom is more than the ability to become an indentured servant to some friggen franchise or multi-billion dollar organization, it’s more than the right to complain about your mistreatment or the ability to sit in the front of a bus that you’d rather not be on in the first place! Freedom is on the other hand, just that.
Freedom is the ability to explore our world. Take trips to the places that fascinate us & obtain the things we desire without sacrificing your quality of life.
As for the American Dream, perhaps it’s time we wake-up, before it’s to late.
you seem bitter.
I’m not bitter. I am just stating some factoids, is all.
It’s not bitterness to acknowledge how screwed up society is or to voice your opinion about the unnatural sate of the natural norm. If it sucks, it sucks. However, we owe it to our selves to find something worth doing while we live. We must take advantage of the opportunities that are in our reach like go to school if you qualify for financial aid. If you don’t, then find inexpensive ways to teach yourself new things. Go to the library, take free or low cost classes. Every new subject that we learn broadens our perspectives. Keep seeking knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom, Faith and Knowledge, they are the only true things of value that you will ever truly own.
