On the eve of a new decade, as folks gear up to act upon or find excuses to avoid their New Year’s resolutions of 2010, I find myself reflecting on the last (and very climatic) year of the most tumultuous decade since the 60′s. [...] If you had to give up everything in your abode less one piece of furniture, what would you keep? What is the first thing that comes to mind? For me, the dearest piece of furniture in my apartment is my bed. And not for the obvious reason. As a chronically single gal most of my romping is done solo. [...] I once heard that a New Yorker is always in search of one of three things: a mate, a job or an apartment. And if you are of one of the rare breeds that has all three then you’re probably out searching for a better version. Where did I hear this? Who knows, it may have been said in an episode of Sex and The City. One receives so much information in this city it’s hard to retain what you’ve heard from where, when, or whom. [...] Today I woke up to a quiet and empty space. Christmas is gone, my roommate is gone and all that is left is me. As I walked through the apartment I caught whiff of the warm lavender and vanilla scents I’d scattered throughout the space just a few days before. It was then that it dawned on me that I have a whole lot to be thankful for as I reflected over the events of the past month. [...] The bitter cold outside my door is so debilitating I find it impossible to wretch my body from the warmth of the bed. Hence, I lie here writing whatever comes to mind in freehand between bouts of sleep. [...] The pursuit of happiness is the most frivolous venture embarked on by mankind. Those who seek its fallacy live an existence clouded by disappointment; destined to die without ever discovering their own truth. [...] The New York MTA is complaining AGAIN about budget deficits and are now taking free metro cards from city school kids and cutting services on already crowded trains and buses. Who is running the New York metro system, a gang of mobsters with no financial acumen? [...] Why is maturity so lacking in American society? Every time I turn my head I am faced with another half-witted person perpetrating adulthood. From the overpaid insensitive politicians running our government, to friends, family, coworkers and lovers, all the way down to little five-year old Sarah. I’ve had it up to my ears with people who are emotionally at the functional level of a three year old. Yeah, little Sarah I’m talking to you too, grow up kid – your five already. [...] With a bit of extra time on my hands these days I’ve been taking some time to clean up my inbox of old irrelevant emails. Last month I sat for several hours and deleted something to the effect of 10,000+ emails. very so often a random email peaks my interest. Like a year ago, United Airlines sent me an email threatening to purge me of all my frequent flyer miles because I had not been active for six months. Turns out the airlines are getting inventive. Redeem your old stale frequent flyer miles for gift certificates to Gap, Old Navy, Macy’s, Saks, Barnes & Noble, I-Tunes and more, or use them to book hotel rooms and car rentals. [...] I have just discovered the American Dream – slave labor till death. How stupid of me to expect more of a country that owes its existence to the exploitation of my ancestors. The luxury of life belong to others with more and since I am not one of those people I am entitled to death. [...] |
